Summary
A rooftop solar project at Shreepad Park Arena in Surat offers a useful apartment community case study, but its reported annual savings need to be distinguished from a verified year of electricity bills. Mercom India’s 9 October report describes 612.69 kW across eight towers, comprising 158 individual rooftop systems commissioned in April 2026. It reports a ₹2.855 crore project cost, ₹1.225 crore subsidy for 157 eligible systems and ₹50.5 lakh in annual electricity savings Surat Housing Complex Eyes ₹5 Million Annual Savings with Rooftop Solar.

A rooftop-solar project at Shreepad Park Arena in Surat offers a useful apartment-community case study, but its reported annual savings need to be distinguished from a verified year of electricity bills.
Mercom India’s 9 October report describes 612.69 kW across eight towers, comprising 158 individual rooftop systems commissioned in April 2026. It reports a ₹2.855 crore project cost, ₹1.225 crore subsidy for 157 eligible systems and ₹50.5 lakh in annual electricity savings -> Surat Housing Complex Eyes ₹5 Million Annual Savings with Rooftop Solar.
The commissioning date means a complete post-installation year had not elapsed when the report appeared. The accessible evidence does not establish how the annual savings were calculated.
Subsidy status needs reconciliation
Installer Solnce Energy separately describes ₹1,22,46,000 in subsidy as sanctioned. That is close to Mercom’s rounded amount, but sanction and receipt are different stages -> Shreepad Park Arena Surat Rooftop Solar Project.
Payment records would establish the amount actually received and its timing. The installer’s post corroborates project scale, but it is not an independent financial audit.
What the headline calculation suggests
Using Mercom’s rounded figures, project cost less reported subsidy equals ₹1.63 crore. Dividing that amount by the reported annual savings gives approximately 3.23 years.
This is a Vantage-derived simple payback illustration. It assumes the subsidy is received in full and annual savings remain at the stated level. It excludes operating costs, financing, future equipment replacement and changes in performance or billing.
It should not be presented as a guaranteed recovery period.
An apartment project requires a meter-level view
The reported arrangement comprises individual systems. Aggregate project figures therefore cannot establish that every participating household receives the same benefit, or that the savings reduce the housing society’s common-area bill.
For another apartment community, the important questions concern who pays, which meters receive credits and who maintains the equipment.
Vantage previously examined rooftop assessment tools that can support early planning. Those assessments help identify generation potential, while the financial case still requires consumption and billing evidence -> Google expands Solar API to cover more than 300 million Indian rooftops.
What would substantiate the savings?
A stronger assessment would reconcile commissioning records, subsidy receipts, generation logs and electricity bills for the participating meters. It would also disclose maintenance obligations and the method used to estimate annual savings.
The Surat case shows a reported deployment at apartment scale. Whether another society can reproduce its economics depends on its own roof, connections, consumption and eligible assistance.

Reporting limitation: No project invoices, subsidy-payment records or complete year of post-installation electricity bills were independently inspected. Annual savings remain a reported claim.
