What should your solar system do during a power cut?

From Vantage Editorial:

Recent Reuters reporting on states seeking additional night-time electricity supplies gives homeowners a reason to revisit their solar design brief. It does not establish that every home will face an outage -> Indian states seek extra power to avoid outages as nighttime supply tightens, officials say.

Our companion analysis separates two decisions: reducing electricity expenditure and paying for a specified backup service. A generation estimate alone cannot tell you which appliances stay on when the grid fails.

  1. Which appliances would you prioritise during an outage, and for how long?
  2. Has an installer clearly documented your backup circuits, usable storage and expected runtime? What remained unclear?
  3. What evidence would justify the additional storage cost for your household: outage records, work continuity, bill savings or another measurable benefit?

Comment in this thread with your experience, reasoning or counter-evidence. If sharing a quotation, remove personal details and include the assumptions behind its backup claims.
