The expansion was announced by Google on September 10 as part of five new sustainability initiatives in India. The Solar API, part of Google's Earth AI work, uses geospatial data and imagery to generate information about buildings and their solar potential. Google says its technology can provide insights for more than 1.2 billion buildings globally.
For homeowners considering rooftop solar, the technology could make one of the earliest stages of the installation process simpler. Instead of starting with a site visit to understand whether a roof is suitable, installers can use the available data to make an initial assessment remotely.
Google says the system can help installers reduce the time and cost involved in producing solar-system designs and customer proposals. Its Solar API documentation describes building-specific insights covering factors such as a property's dimensions and solar potential, along with datasets that can be used for more detailed analysis.
Two solar platforms, Solar Ladder and OpenSolar, are already integrating Solar API data into their workflows, according to Google. The company says the tools can support automated layouts and help installers account for rooftop features such as parapets and water tanks when preparing proposals.
That does not mean a remote assessment eliminates the need for all physical checks. The API is designed to provide data for solar assessment and system planning; actual installation still involves site-specific considerations that may require on-ground verification.
The expansion comes as rooftop solar becomes a larger part of India's clean-energy push. Google has also announced a separate long-term agreement with ReNew Power linked to a 150 MW solar project in Rajasthan. Google says the project will provide environmental attributes associated with the clean electricity generated, which it will use to address electricity-related emissions across its value chain.
The Solar API expansion is therefore less about Google installing panels itself and more about providing digital infrastructure that solar companies can use during the sales and design process.
For India's residential solar market, the potential significance is scale. A tool capable of providing rooftop insights across more than 300 million properties can give installers a common digital starting point for identifying suitable roofs and preparing preliminary proposals.
The practical test will be how accurately and consistently those remote assessments translate into installations. But by expanding the Solar API across such a large part of India's building stock, Google is betting that better rooftop data can remove some of the friction between a homeowner's interest in solar and an actual installation.
