Binance says a security incident has an estimated impact of about $6.3 billion and that roughly $3 billion of affected assets has been frozen on-chain. After initially suspending deposits and withdrawals, Binance later said deposits were operating normally while withdrawals remained paused.

What Binance Has Reported

In a security update published on 30 October, the exchange said its initial investigation suggested that a compromised engineer's laptop may have enabled an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawals. The company said it had found no evidence of a wallet private-key leak and would publish a detailed post-mortem once the facts are verified.

The company says it will cover losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company funds, and that user funds are safe. These are Binance's statements, not independently established proof of the ultimate recovery or timing of access to funds. Its investigation continues.

The estimated impact and frozen assets are different measures. A freeze can restrict movement of identified assets; it is not the same as completing a recovery or returning money to an individual account. The figures may change as the investigation develops.

Why Access Matters

Binance initially suspended deposits and withdrawals as a precaution. In a later update, it said deposits were operating normally and withdrawals remained paused. Reuters reports the company is working with law enforcement and industry partners. Its report on the incident also describes the potential market impact. A user's account balance, ability to transact and eventual recovery are separate questions. The available reporting does not establish the number of affected Indian users or an individual customer's loss.

For Indian holders, the immediate relevance depends on whether they use the affected platform and need access to assets. Those without exposure should not infer that their holdings elsewhere are affected. Market prices can move independently of an individual account's status.

What to Check

  • Check Binance's official security announcements for current deposit and withdrawal status before attempting a transaction. The company has given an expected restoration window, not a guarantee; check the latest official announcement.
  • Review your account records through the official app or website and preserve statements securely. Do not share passwords, recovery phrases or one-time codes with anyone claiming to offer help.
  • Check any platform's custody and withdrawal terms before assuming that an exchange balance is immediately accessible during an incident.
