Tamil Nadu has introduced an additional subsidy of up to ₹22,000 for households installing rooftop solar, taking the maximum combined central and state support for an eligible 3 kW system to ₹1 lakh. The state scheme is being implemented alongside the Union government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
Under the new scheme, households installing a 1 kW system will receive ₹5,000 from the Tamil Nadu government, in addition to the ₹30,000 central subsidy. For a 2 kW system, the state contribution is ₹10,000, on top of the ₹60,000 available from the Centre.
For a 3 kW system, the Tamil Nadu subsidy rises to ₹22,000. Combined with the ₹78,000 central subsidy, the total government support reaches ₹1 lakh. The state solar portal also lists ₹22,000 as the maximum state contribution for systems above 3 kW.
The Tamil Nadu government has allocated ₹50 crore for the state scheme and plans to cover 1 lakh residential consumers by March 2027, according to the Times of India. The target is aligned with the current implementation period of the central programme.
The subsidy is designed to work without requiring households to submit a separate application for the state component. According to a state official quoted by the Times of India, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) will obtain applicant information from the central government's portal and transfer the state subsidy directly to the beneficiary's bank account after the installation service has been completed.
The Tamil Nadu solar portal now provides the state scheme's application process and subsidy information. It says the central PM Surya Ghar process runs first through the national portal. Once the central subsidy is credited, the Tamil Nadu system takes over for the additional state benefit, without requiring a second application.
The portal currently specifies that the subsidy is released only after installation, net metering and commissioning requirements are completed and eligibility conditions are met. It also says installations must use modules meeting the programme's applicable domestic-content and approved-list requirements and must be carried out by vendors listed by TEDA.
For homeowners, the immediate attraction is the reduction in upfront installation cost. The state portal's illustrative calculation puts the reference cost of a 3 kW system at ₹2 lakh, against combined government support of ₹1 lakh. Actual installation costs can vary by system, vendor and site.
The move adds a state-level incentive to India's wider push to expand residential rooftop solar. The central PM Surya Ghar programme already provides financial assistance to eligible residential consumers, with the subsidy transferred after installation and verification under the programme's rules.
For Tamil Nadu households considering solar, the key question is therefore not simply the headline ₹1 lakh figure. Eligibility, system size, installation cost, approved vendors and the completion of the required grid-connection and verification steps will determine the actual benefit received.
