Mumbai Metro 9 construction accident leaves 23-year-old seriously injured

A 23-year-old man was seriously injured after a large cement block fell from an under-construction Metro 9 bridge in Mumbai’s Kashimira area on Sunday, September 20, according to reports by the Indian Express and Times of India.

The man, identified in local reports as Shadab, was crossing the road near Akshit Bar when he stopped to answer a phone call. The concrete piece then fell from the metro construction site and struck him on the head, the Times of India reported. He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road for treatment.

The incident has brought renewed attention to safety around Mumbai’s expanding metro construction network. The Indian Express reported that the Kashimira incident was the third metro-related accident in Mumbai within 10 days.

The latest accident came a day after a separate incident in Vikhroli West, where a falling iron barricade from a Metro 4 construction site killed a 54-year-old man, according to the Times of India and Hindustan Times. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority subsequently imposed a ₹2 crore fine on the contractor in that case, based on preliminary findings.

Reports from the Kashimira site also cite local concerns about construction material falling from the elevated work area. The Times of India reported that residents said iron rods and other material had fallen from the site on earlier occasions, including an incident involving an iron object near a school van about a month earlier. Those claims were attributed to local residents and were not independently established in the report.

The Kashimira section forms part of Mumbai Metro Line 9, which is under construction in the Mira Road–Mira Bhayandar area. The incident occurred on a stretch where construction activity is continuing above roads used by pedestrians and motorists.

The accident puts the focus on how construction zones are secured while work continues over active public roads. Falling objects from elevated infrastructure can pose risks to people who may be outside the immediate boundaries of a construction site.

The Indian Express described the incident as the latest in a series of metro-related accidents in the city, while Hindustan Times noted that it occurred just a day after the fatal Vikhroli incident.
