Four workers were killed and several others injured after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Dhulkot near Ambala City on Sunday, September 27, while construction work was underway.
The collapse occurred while workers were laying a lintel on the building's third floor, according to The Tribune. Around 35 to 40 labourers were reportedly at the site when the structure gave way. Thirteen people were rescued from the debris and taken to Ambala Civil Hospital, where doctors declared four of them dead. Rescue and debris-clearing operations continued at the site.
Earlier reports from The Indian Express said at least 10 labourers had been injured and that additional workers were feared trapped. Police and emergency teams reached the site after local residents initially began rescue efforts. Heavy earth-moving equipment was brought in to clear the debris and search for survivors.
The exact number of people at the construction site remained unclear as rescue operations progressed. Reports during the evening gave different estimates of the number of workers who could have been inside the building when it collapsed. India Today reported that 13 people had been rescued and that the rescue operation involved multiple emergency agencies.
The building was still under construction when it collapsed. The immediate cause of the structural failure had not been established in the reports available Sunday night.
Police said an investigation into the cause of the collapse would begin after the rescue operation was completed, according to The Indian Express.
The incident puts construction-site safety back in focus, particularly around structural work involving partially completed buildings. Any assessment of whether construction standards or safety procedures were breached will depend on the investigation and cannot be established from the initial reports.
Rescue teams continued working through the debris Sunday evening as authorities searched for anyone who might still be trapped. The final casualty and rescue figures could change as the operation progresses.
