A four-storey residential building in Hyderabad’s Gopanpally was demolished on Saturday after it developed a dangerous tilt, prompting the evacuation of its occupants and nearby residents.
The building, located in NTR Nagar, developed a noticeable lean on Friday, September 18. Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) officials and disaster-response teams moved quickly to secure the area and evacuate people from the structure and neighbouring houses. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Officials subsequently inspected the building and its structural condition before ordering its demolition. HYDRAA’s Disaster Response Force, along with CMC engineering and town-planning teams, took part in the operation. Telangana Today reported that officials used HYDRAA’s high-reach “Bahubali” hydraulic machine to bring down the building while trying to avoid damage to adjacent properties.
The structure stood on a plot of about 50 square yards. Telangana Today reported that officials considered it an unauthorised construction and said it had been built without CMC permission. The report also said that regulations for plots of that size permit only a ground-plus-one structure.
The building’s sudden movement raised concern because of the density of construction in the surrounding area. The New Indian Express reported that the structure had been built on a 40–50 square-yard plot and that nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution while officials assessed the situation.
The demolition also came less than a month after the collapse of an unauthorised seven-storey building in nearby Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, on August 22. That collapse killed two workers, according to reports.
The cause of the Gopanpally building’s tilt remains subject to investigation. Deccan Chronicle reported that police had registered a case and were examining responsibility for alleged lapses in the construction and maintenance of the structure.
For residents, the immediate priority was preventing a collapse in a densely built neighbourhood. The authorities’ response — evacuation, restricting access and then demolishing the unstable structure — prevented the incident from turning into another fatal building collapse.
The episode nevertheless raises broader questions about construction on small urban plots and the enforcement of building permissions and structural-safety requirements in rapidly developing parts of Hyderabad.
