Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched a dedicated portal for residents to register for rooftop solar installations, with eligible households able to access combined Centre and Delhi government subsidies of up to ₹1.56 lakh.
The Delhi PM Surya Ghar portal, launched on September 21, is designed as a single point for registration, subsidy information, authorised vendors and grievance redressal. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, according to government information reported by Hindustan Times and DD India.
Under the scheme, the Union government provides a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for residential rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW. Delhi is providing a matching subsidy of up to ₹78,000, taking the combined support to ₹1.56 lakh for eligible installations.
The scheme is particularly aimed at domestic consumers using up to 400 units of electricity a month. The Delhi government says such consumers can have rooftop systems of up to 3 kW installed without upfront payment under the programme. The government is also encouraging smaller systems of up to 2 kW for households with limited roof space.
The portal is intended to make the application process easier. Residents can enter their electricity connection details, access information on applicable subsidies and identify authorised vendors. It also includes information on grievance redressal and, according to DD India, options such as group net metering and community solar for consumers facing space or financing constraints.
The programme is not limited to individual homes. Group housing societies are also covered, with the subsidy for solar installations in common areas increased from ₹2,000 per kW to ₹11,000 per kW, according to Hindustan Times.
Delhi is targeting around 2.3 lakh households under the initiative. For low-consumption households using up to 200 units a month, the government has also announced an additional incentive linked to reductions in electricity consumption after solar installation.
The scheme could therefore lower one of the biggest barriers for households considering rooftop solar: the initial installation cost. But the actual benefit for an individual household will depend on factors including its electricity consumption, available roof area, system size and the applicable subsidy structure.
For residents considering installation, the new portal provides a starting point to check eligibility, compare authorised vendors and understand the available financial support before proceeding.
