Thane Flyover Shut After Cracks Emerge Just 14 Months After Opening

The Kasarvadavali flyover in Thane has been shut to vehicular traffic after cracks and a hanging concrete portion were spotted on the structure, just 14 months after it opened. The closure is expected to add pressure to traffic on the already congested Ghodbunder Road.

The flyover was inaugurated on July 8, 2025, and was built to divert traffic, including vehicles travelling towards Gujarat, away from the road below. It was intended to ease congestion around Kasarvadavali and nearby residential areas.

The problem came to light on Sunday after a video showing a section of concrete hanging from the flyover circulated among local residents and commuters. According to Hindustan Times, the damage was observed around the middle of the structure near its joints.

Following the alert, teams from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and other agencies inspected the site. Traffic on the flyover was stopped for several hours before being allowed to resume, pending the decision to close the structure.

The exact cause of the cracks has not yet been established. Hindustan Times reported that a civil engineer suggested improper filling of sand at the joints as a possible factor, but that explanation has not been confirmed by authorities. The MMRDA inspection is expected to determine the extent and cause of the damage.

The closure took effect from 11.59pm on September 15, according to Thane traffic police. Authorities have not announced a reopening date. The duration will depend on the inspection and any repairs that are found to be necessary.

Commuters can use the flyover's slip roads towards Gaimukh while the structure remains closed, according to Thane traffic police. The closure is likely to put additional pressure on Ghodbunder Road, where traffic congestion was already a problem.

For residents and daily commuters, the immediate concern is the disruption caused by the shutdown. For authorities, the larger issue is establishing why visible structural damage appeared on a flyover that had been in service for only about 14 months.

Until the MMRDA completes its assessment, however, the cause of the damage and the timeline for reopening remain uncertain.
