India's infrastructure output grows 4.8 Percent in August — india infrastructure

India’s infrastructure output grew 4.8% year-on-year in August, with strong growth in cement and electricity offsetting declines in several energy-related sectors, according to provisional government data reported by Reuters and Economic Times.

The August growth was slower than the 5% recorded in July, after the government's final revision brought July's earlier provisional growth estimate of 5.4% down to 5%. The August figure also represents the third release under India's revised core-sector series, which uses 2022-23 as its base year and includes iron ore in the basket.

Five of the eight core industries recorded year-on-year growth in August. Cement production rose 12.5%, electricity generation increased 11.6%, iron ore output grew 5.5%, steel production rose 3.4% and refinery-product output increased 2.6%, Economic Times reported.

The cement and steel numbers are particularly relevant to India's construction industry. Cement is a major input for housing, roads and other infrastructure, while steel demand is closely tied to construction and manufacturing activity.

The picture was weaker across several energy and agricultural-input sectors. Coal production fell 3.8%, crude oil output declined 3.6%, natural gas production dropped 4.9%, and fertiliser production contracted 12.4%, according to Reuters.

The mixed performance means the headline 4.8% growth does not represent an across-the-board expansion. Instead, much of the momentum came from cement, electricity and iron ore, while declines in coal, oil, gas and fertilisers restrained overall growth.

For the first five months of the financial year, from April through August, cumulative core-sector output increased 4.3%, compared with 2.4% growth during the corresponding period a year earlier.

The eight core industries covered by the index are coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity. Together, they account for 40.27% of the weight of items included in India's Index of Industrial Production, according to Economic Times.

For the construction sector, the August data offers a mixed but significant signal: cement and steel production continued to expand, while weakness in some energy and input sectors points to uneven conditions across the wider economy. The next industrial and infrastructure releases will show whether the strength in construction-linked output is sustained.
