A five-storey building used for student accommodation collapsed in southwest Delhi on Sunday, killing six people and triggering a rescue operation that continued through the night.

The building, located near Delhi University's South Campus, was reportedly being used as student accommodation. The collapse occurred at around 1:30 pm, according to reports. Emergency teams rushed to the densely populated neighbourhood, where narrow lanes and surrounding buildings complicated the rescue effort.

The operation continued overnight. The Indian Express reported that the sixth victim was recovered from the rubble at around 3 am on Monday, following an operation that lasted roughly 16 hours.

The building was undergoing renovation work before it collapsed, according to multiple reports. However, the precise cause of the collapse has not been officially established, and investigators are yet to determine whether the ongoing work contributed to the structural failure.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Delhi Police registered a case against the building owner and others, according to The Indian Express and other reports, while the Delhi government ordered a magisterial inquiry.

The collapse has also raised questions about the safety of buildings used as student accommodation in areas surrounding Delhi University. Satya Niketan is a densely built neighbourhood with a large population of students living in privately operated paying guest accommodations and hostels because of its proximity to the university's South Campus.

AP reported that the building was an older structure and had been undergoing renovation. But officials have not yet released a final finding on what caused it to collapse.

The investigation is expected to examine the condition of the building, the nature of the renovation work and whether required safety and construction norms were followed.

The tragedy unfolded as students and residents in the area were going about their Sunday afternoon, turning a busy neighbourhood near the university campus into the site of a large-scale emergency operation.

The incident also highlights a wider concern facing densely populated parts of Delhi: the safety of ageing and altered buildings in neighbourhoods where properties are frequently renovated, expanded or converted to accommodate more residents.

For now, however, the immediate facts remain clear. Six people have been confirmed dead, and at least 11 were rescued after the building collapsed. The final cause of the disaster remains under investigation.

As authorities continue their inquiry, the focus will shift from the rescue operation to accountability—and whether warning signs, if any, were missed before the building came down.
