Bengaluru Metro Pink Line Elevated Stretch Likely to Open This Month

Bengaluru’s 7.5-km elevated stretch of the Namma Metro Pink Line is expected to open to passengers in September, with the exact inauguration date still awaiting confirmation from the Union government.

The section runs between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere in south Bengaluru and is the first operational phase of the larger Pink Line. Karnataka Minister for Greater Bengaluru Development Krishna Byre Gowda said after a trial run on September 2 that the stretch was ready for inauguration, subject to the remaining approvals. India Today reported that authorities were still awaiting the necessary rolling-stock and safety clearances.

The elevated section has six stations: Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIM Bangalore, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere. Jayadeva Hospital will provide an interchange with the existing Yellow Line, giving commuters another connection into Bengaluru’s wider Metro network.

The opening has been delayed several times. The New Indian Express reported in August that the Railway Board's approval for the rolling stock was pending, after which the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) would need to inspect the stretch before passenger services could begin. BMRCL Managing Director P.C. Jaffer had said the construction work under the corporation's responsibility was complete.

More recent reporting has confirmed that the infrastructure is ready, but the final statutory process remains the key hurdle. Moneycontrol reported after the September 2 inspection that railway sanction for the new rolling stock was still awaited, followed by the CMRS authorisation required for commercial operations.

The elevated section is only part of the Pink Line. The complete corridor will eventually run from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, combining the 7.5-km elevated stretch with an underground section connecting Dairy Circle and Nagawara. The underground portion is still under construction.

That distinction matters for commuters. The first phase will improve access along the Bannerghatta Road side of south Bengaluru and provide a new interchange at Jayadeva Hospital, but the full north-south connectivity promised by the Pink Line will come only after the underground section opens.

For now, BMRCL and state authorities are focused on completing the approvals needed to put the first stretch into passenger service. Officials remain hopeful that the elevated section can begin operations before the end of September, but no confirmed public opening date has been announced.
