Rooftop solar systems generate electricity through photovoltaic panels installed on building roofs. Under applicable regulations, eligible consumers can also export surplus electricity to the grid through net metering, helping reduce electricity bills while increasing the share of renewable energy in the city's power mix.

The government has yet to release detailed operational guidelines, including implementation timelines, eligibility conditions or incentive mechanisms. Additional information is expected once the proposal is formally announced.

The initiative aligns with India's broader push to expand renewable energy capacity through distributed solar generation. Programmes such as the Centre's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana have sought to encourage rooftop solar adoption by offering financial assistance to eligible households, while several states have introduced complementary policies to increase installations.

For Delhi residents and businesses, a wider rooftop solar programme could provide an opportunity to lower long-term electricity costs while reducing dependence on conventional grid power during daylight hours.
