Small-Cap Funds Are Attracting Record Money. Is That a Good Sign?

Indian investors poured approximately ₹9,039 crore into small-cap mutual funds during September 2026.

Together, small-cap and mid-cap funds received ₹16,873 crore in net inflows, representing around 44% of all equity mutual fund net inflows for the month.

But recent valuation research presents a complication.

The Nifty Smallcap 250 was reportedly trading at 23.6 times forward earnings, compared with 17.6 times for the Nifty 50 in September.

This raises a question that matters more than the amount of money flowing into funds.

Can the underlying businesses grow fast enough to justify the prices investors are paying?

There are different ways to interpret the data.

Some investors believe smaller businesses offer attractive long-term growth opportunities.

Others are concerned that higher valuations, lower liquidity and the potential for sharper corrections can make these investments vulnerable during difficult market conditions.

We would like to explore three questions:

  1. When choosing a small-cap mutual fund, how much importance do you give to valuations compared with historical fund returns?

  2. Do you think record fund inflows reflect disciplined long-term investing, or could some investors be following recent performance without fully understanding the risks?

  3. If you are saving for a home, retirement or another major goal, how do you decide how much exposure to smaller companies is appropriate?

There is no need to share personal portfolio values or sensitive financial details.

We welcome different views, practical experiences and evidence that challenges either side of the argument.

Join the discussion below and share how you evaluate growth opportunities against valuation and liquidity risks.
