Budget 2027: Would Lower Capital Gains Tax Change Your Investments?

The government is reportedly examining a possible reduction in India's long-term capital gains tax ahead of Budget 2027.

An Indian Express report published on 26 October also describes discussions about allowing foreign portfolio investors to calculate taxable gains in dollar terms instead of only rupee terms.

These are proposals under discussion, not approved tax changes.

For eligible Indian equity investments, the current published LTCG base rate is 12.5% on aggregate annual gains exceeding ₹1.25 lakh.

Consider a hypothetical investor with ₹3.75 lakh of taxable long-term equity gains.

At 12.5%, the base tax would be ₹46,875.

If a future policy reduced the rate to 10%, with all other relevant rules unchanged, that tax would fall to ₹37,500.

The difference would be ₹9,375 before cess and any applicable surcharge.

The lower rate is only an illustrative scenario, not a confirmed government decision.

That raises a broader question: how much should taxes influence an investment strategy?

Let's examine three questions.

  1. Would a reduction in LTCG tax encourage you to invest more in Indian equities, or are valuations, earnings and market risk more important?

  2. Should India prioritise lower capital gains taxes for domestic investors, changes for foreign portfolio investors, or greater stability in existing rules?

  3. If you were planning to sell investments for a home purchase or another financial goal, would you consider delaying a transaction because tax rules might change?

We welcome different perspectives, economic reasoning and relevant practical experiences.
