PSU Banks vs Private Banks: Where Would You Invest Today?

India's Q2 FY27 banking results reveal an interesting divide.

Public-sector banks are showing stronger improvement in net interest margins, while several leading private banks are dealing with higher funding costs.

According to a CareEdge Ratings comparison reported by Economic Times:

  • Selected PSU bank NIMs reached 2.58%, up 10 basis points sequentially.
  • Private-bank NIMs stood at approximately 3.29%, broadly unchanged sequentially.
  • PSU banks recorded 18.4% year-on-year net interest income growth.
  • Private banks recorded 14.4% growth.

The numbers reveal a critical distinction.

PSU banks are experiencing stronger recent margin improvement, but private banks still retain higher absolute margins in the selected comparison.

Let's Discuss

1. Would you prefer a PSU bank stock trading at a lower valuation or a major private bank with a more established profitability record?

2. Does stronger quarterly profit growth influence your investment decisions?

3. How important are deposit costs and asset quality when evaluating a bank?

4. Would you rather select individual bank stocks or invest through a banking ETF?

5. Do you think the current PSU-bank advantage will persist, or will private banks recover their margins as funding conditions normalise?
