Will India's Proposed Glass Import Duties Make Construction More Expensive?

India's DGTR has recommended countervailing duties of 8.58% to 15.66% on specified clear float glass imports from Malaysia.

The recommendation aims to address the effects of subsidised imports on domestic glass manufacturers.

But it raises a broader question for construction and real estate.

If imported glass becomes more expensive, will Indian manufacturers benefit without significantly increasing the costs faced by builders and homeowners?

There are important distinctions to consider:

  • The proposed duties are not yet confirmed as implemented.
  • Not every imported glass product is covered.
  • A higher raw-material cost does not automatically produce an equivalent increase in finished window prices.
  • Domestic manufacturing capacity and competition will influence the eventual outcome.

Let's Discuss

1. Should India prioritise protecting domestic glass manufacturers, even if certain building inputs become costlier?

2. Have you seen changes in window, façade or architectural glass quotations recently?

3. When selecting construction materials, do you prioritise Indian manufacturing, price, durability or technical performance?

4. How can homeowners ensure that contractors pass on only genuine material-cost increases?
